We believe our mission as the Cathedral Church of the Diocese of Vermont is collaborative leadership. We value our role as the seat of the Bishop. We serve the Diocese as a gathering place for the people, a model of innovation in liturgy and Christian formation, and a catalyst for new initiatives. We facilitate relationships and build partnerships with other parishes in the Diocese. We train people for ministry in the Diocese and the world. We commit to a Cathedral Without Walls program that will invite all Vermont Episcopalians to partner with the ministries of the Cathedral. -from Long Range Plan 2006

What is a Cathedral? “Thomas, Bishop in the Church of God, and our Bishop, we welcome you to your Cathedral Church, the symbol and center of your pastoral, liturgical, and teaching ministry in this Diocese.” “...I pray that the ministry which we share may be pleasing to God, and that it may strengthen the life of this diocese, and the whole Church of God…” |

St. Paul’s ministry as diocesan cathedral is managed by the Cathedral Chapter, whose role it is to oversee this ministry in all respects: listening to the needs of the diocese, developing a Cathedral Without Walls program, managing its various aspects, funding its mission and evaluating its work in consultation with the Cathedral Vestry. A cycle of organizing lies behind such oversight: listening campaigns, research meetings, actions, and evaluation. The Chapter will consist of twelve members: the Bishop, Dean, Canon to the Ordinary, Canons Resident, two members of Diocesan Council, a Warden and member from the Cathedral Vestry, and three at-large members, one from the membership of the Cathedral Church and two leaders of diocesan ministries outside the Champlain Valley Deanery.
Our priority is to partner in ministry with deaneries, parishes and individuals throughout the Diocese of Vermont. In initial conversations on the deanery level, representatives have articulated a desire to see the Cathedral as a resource to help them do ministry better, in areas such as liturgy, social justice and outreach ministries, congregational development and youth ministries. A Cathedral Without Walls program will function as a delivery system, a responsive and proactive engagement addressing issues and needs that deaneries, congregations and individuals have identified themselves.
Action: We will develop an approach to initiate and implement a Cathedral Without Walls program. Such plans for implementation should include an evaluation of the current programs: annual lecture/workshop, Epiphany quiet day, acolyte festival, VermontWatch, Cathedral choir and clergy on the road, Hopkins Bookstore, website, and Christian Meditation Center. Action: We will hold regular listening campaigns in the various regions of the diocese to listen to and develop the Cathedral Without Walls program in consultation with the local needs of parishes and organizations of the diocese that will result in a long range plan to be presented to diocesan convention. Action: We will support the Cathedral Chapter in the implementation of its plan, evaluation of its results, and development of ways to fund the Chapter program outside the Cathedral’s budget. The Chapter will consult annually with the Vestry at a regular meeting concerning the direction and challenges of this ministry.
