History of Cathedral Arts

The Episcopal Cathedral Church of St. Paul has a long history of supporting the public arts, with Cathedral-sponsored arts events dating back well before the dedication of the current cathedral in 1973.  After the old cathedral was destroyed by fire in 1971, the Cathedral Arts Committee charged the Building Committee with the task of creating a space suitable for vocal, instrumental, dance, and dramatic performances as well as for the display of visual arts.  

The cathedral’s soaring, light-filled interior quickly proved to be such a flexible and acoustically supportive space for the presentation of an ambitious and diverse range of performances and exhibitions that the Vermont Council on the Arts in 1976  cited its success in “building not just a structure but a community.”
